The Gionee Steel 5 succeeds the Steel 3, which was released in 2017. This model introduces several upgrades following a three-year interval between releases. The device features a 6.22-inch HD+ display with a resolution of 720 x 1520 pixels. The screen includes a waterdrop notch that houses the front-facing camera sensor.
Under the hood, the Steel 5 is powered by an octa-core MediaTek Helio P23 (MT6763) processor clocked at 2.0 GHz,paired with a Mali-G71 GPU. It is available in two configurations: 4GB of RAM with 64GB of internal storage, and 6GB of RAM with 128GB of internal storage. Both variants support microSD card expansion for additional storage. The rear panel design has been updated, but the overall appearance and specifications closely resemble the recently announced Gionee K3.
The camera setup includes a dual rear system with a 12-megapixel primary sensor featuring phase detection autofocus (PDAF) and an f/2.0 aperture. The secondary rear sensor is 2 megapixels and incorporates AI capabilities. On the front, there is a 13-megapixel camera capable of recording 1080p video and supporting AI-based face recognition.
Notably, the Steel 5 does not include a fingerprint scanner. It supports dual SIM functionality with 4G VoLTE on both slots. The device is powered by a 5000mAh battery and charges via a USB Type-C port. It runs on Android 9.0 Pie out of the box. Additional specifications and features are provided in the accompanying table.
